Only 4 Bogeys… Here’s Why

What really decides scores?
Dear Members, Clients and Friends,

Some insights from the US Masters and the historic SA Open we had the privilege of hosting, provide a clear reminder of what really decides scores – and it’s not always what seems most obvious.

Rory McIlroy
successfully defended his Masters title last weekend – becoming only the 4th player in history to do so.

Also competing in The Masters was young Casey Jarvis, who became one of the youngest winners of the SA Open at just 22 years.

The numbers tell an interesting story:

Jarvis in his SA Open win:
• Driving accuracy: 58% (59th)
• Greens in regulation: 68% (56th)
• But: 1.68 putts per GIR (4th)

He also managed to keep his bogey tally down to only 4 all week! – which points to an incredible short game! – I also saw that he had improved the putting stat above from being ranked 47th in 2024 to 4th this year – his total putts also sank to below 28 while the DP World Tour average sits at above 29. His other stats actually worsened – showing clearly why he came close to winning 3 events in a row starting with the Magical Kenya Open.

McIlroy in his Masters win:
• Driving accuracy: 55% (53rd)
• Greens in regulation: 66% (22nd)
• But: 1.54 putts per GIR (3rd)

If you watched, you would have seen some incredible up and downs from some of the most challenging positions while struggling with pulled iron shots. I know that he has also worked very hard on his putting over the last few years.

See the similarities?
They were not the most accurate by a long way – not even the longest drivers – but they scored better than anyone else.

This is where data becomes valuable.
Just like technology in coaching, it removes guesswork and highlights what actually matters.

It’s not about perfect golf – it’s about:
• Managing the difficult moments
• Limiting mistakes; and,
• Taking advantage of the opportunities

What this means for your game
While tour players operate at a different level, the principles remain the same.

At every level, improvement comes from:
• Managing your unique swing patterns
• Making better decisions
• Improving your short game
• Practising with structure

For most golfers, the biggest gains are not in major swing changes – but in areas often overlooked.

A practical way to improve this
To focus on these areas, I’ll be introducing two small-group masterclasses starting in May:

Putting Masterclass

Focused on distance control, reducing unnecessary putts, and learning how to actually practise putting effectively.

On-Course Masterclass
Learn how to manage your game, make better decisions, and avoid costly mistakes – without needing major swing changes.

These sessions are practical, easy to follow, and often lead to immediate improvements in both scoring and enjoyment.

How it works:
• Small groups (minimum 3 players)
• You can join individually or bring friends and / or the family – even beginners are welcome!
• Practical, easy-to-understand sessions

Planned times:
• Putting: Saturday mornings
• On-course: Weekday afternoons

Some more will follow in August, and we are also planning some fun FlightScope & Swing Catalyst events, watch this space.

A complete coaching approach
These sessions form part of a broader coaching structure that also includes:
• Individual sessions
• Structured development programs
• Ongoing coaching

With Club Champs happening later in this year, the next few months are an ideal time to build your game and create more enjoyment.
