| Golf fans have plenty to look forward to as two great championships approach on opposite ends of the globe. The spotlight first falls on the Ryder Cup, where golf’s fiercest team rivalry will play out, this time over the legendary Bethpage Black. Known as one of the toughest public courses in the world, Bethpage has hosted U.S. Opens and PGA Championships, and at more than 6,700 metres, its demanding layout is certain to test the nerves of even the best players from Europe and the United States.
Who are you backing this weekend?
Closer to home, anticipation builds for the Investec South African Open, which returns early in 2026 to the much-loved Stellenbosch Golf Club. Already rich in heritage, the club has recently added extra length to its layout and will present itself as a par 70, creating yet another fierce challenge for competitors. With tree-lined fairways, clever bunkering, and breathtaking mountain views, Stellenbosch promises to deliver a championship worthy of its proud history. #JourneyTotheSAOpen |

| Heritage Day celebrations |
| This past Wednesday we celebrated Heritage Day or as many of us proudly call it, National Braai Day – probably best presented by Outdoor Warehouse with golf clubs, tongs, and a good dose of South African spirit. And honestly, can there be a better way to mark the occasion than with a round of golf with friends, followed by a braai and a glass (or two) of wine? On the fairways we celebrated the birdies, and at the fireside we laughed (and maybe cried a little) about the bogeys. Heritage Day reminds us that golf, much like a braai, is about more than the scorecard – it’s about heritage, wine, friendship, and life itself, shared in good company and made memorable by the moments in between. |
| Congratulations to the winners… |

| A huge thank you to Outdoor Warehouse…. Baie dankie Kobus, dit was ‘n wonderlike dag wat ALMAL geniet het en ‘n groot voorreg dat ek saam met jou kon speel. Tot volgende keer! Go and have a look at their wonderful shops nearby in Somerset West and Tygervalley! |
| Boland’s best on their way |
| We are proud to announce the following team to represent the Boland Golf Union at the Nomads SA U13 Team Championship scheduled to take place at Magalies Park Golf Club from 7 to 9 October 2025. |
| Countdown to the ABACUS Eikestad Classic |
| I’m glad you got this far and so will you be shortly too…. Get ready, the countdown is on! In just more than 72 hours we’ll be unveiling the ABACUS Eikestad Classic, and it promises to be nothing short of spectacular. Think glitz, glamour, and a step back into the roaring Jazz Age, where the spirit of Gatsby comes alive and opulence is the order of the day.
With space more limited than a fairway off the first tee, you’ll want to keep your eye on your inbox even harder than you keep your eye on the golf ball. Mark your calendars: the festivities run from 2–8 November 2025, and we can’t wait to welcome you to another magical celebration of golf, style, and life — all proudly presented by ABACUS. |
| It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Joe Estiang, who tragically left us last Monday. Joe was part of the fabric of Stellenbosch GC for many decades, walking alongside countless members and visitors as a trusted caddie and a familiar friend. Known for his calm demeanour and gentle presence, Joe brought a sense of ease and warmth to every round, reminding us that golf is as much about the people we share it with as it is about the game itself. He will be sorely missed on our fairways, but never forgotten in our hearts. Rest in peace, Joe. |
| Last chance for the early birds |
| The golf course is recovering beautifully after the spring treatment, and I’d like to extend a big thank you to Neil and his STM team for their excellent work. You’ll already notice a few bunkers back in play, with the rest following in the coming weeks. Please be patient as the sand settles and remains soft for now. Many trees have also been pruned, and several tee boxes are currently closed as we’ve sodded them with new grass in preparation for the Investec SA Open.
I trust you’ve taken advantage of the early-bird special for the Members Pavilion—tickets are nearly sold out! If not, head straight to the Stellenbosch Golf Club website and secure yours today for this unforgettable February event. See you on Saturday, and for the rest, I’ll see you Sunday at our Monthly Mix competition and quiz. Until then, keep it down the middle!
All the best,
Louis |
