Greetings from Stellenbosch Golf Club Tuesday, 04 July 2017

Good afternoon to all our Members,

Stellenbosch Golf Club's Open Day

On Sunday afternoon, the 2nd of July, Stellenbosch Golf Club hosted the much anticipated “Open Day for the community” that you might have seen being promoted on social and local media platforms. The main aim of the day was to introduce our community and, more specifically, individuals from previously disadvantaged communities to the club and what we have to offer.

The response was overwhelming with a field of 90+ players teeing off in a 4-Ball Alliance Stableford format competition that was ideal for the spirit of the day and the different playing abilities that varied from beginner to your average mid-handicapper in each fourball. All the players were welcomed by our friendly staff on the patio during registration where a welcome drink and sandwich made each and every participant feel at ease and comfortable in an unfamiliar surrounding and atmosphere to most.

Our ever impressive Food and Beverage Department gave a top class halfway house service exhibition just behind the 18th green with a warm grab-and-go meal and carried their excellence through to a beef curry meal after the round during prizegiving.

There were a few nervous swings out there, especially off the first tee, but luckily there was help at hand in the form of our PGA accredited coach, Erich Kliem, for anyone who didn’t feel like the challenge of our layout at this stage. Those who decided on some tutoring instead, lined up at the driving range where Erich, Johan and Pierre (PGA apprentices) took them through the basics of the game by giving everyone some personal attention that was an experience which would be the envy of many.

If the success of the day had to be judged on the smiles and joyous mood that prevailed throughout, I will let you be the judge by viewing the pictures we took during the course of the day.

Thank you to all who contributed towards the success of the day and special word of thanks to all of the committee members who took time out of their schedule to enjoy the day with us. Even though the competition was not the main focus of the day, we would like to congratulate Rudi, Bradley, Grant and Olden on an incredible 114 points.

We look forward to welcoming all the participants who showed interest in becoming members at Stellenbosch Golf Club in the near future.

Group 1 Nissan Challenge 2017

The 5th round of the Group 1 Nissan Challenge was played last week Wednesday, 28 June. Taking home the 1st prize, mouthwatering braai packs and biltong, on a score of 47 points were Christiaan Laubscher and M. Looch. This maiden event for SGC is being played over 10 rounds throughout the course of the year in a 4BBB Stableford format. Eligibility for the grand prize, use of a vehicle for a year, requires the betterball partnership to remain the same and play in at least 6 of the 10 rounds during the year. The current leaderboard has been updated and can be viewed here.

Remember to mark your calendar for the next round which will be played on Wednesday, 12 July, and more importantly you should make sure that your partner knows it as well. Thank you once again to Group 1 Nissan for sponsoring this groundbreaking initiative and innovative concept of a year long competition which all of our members are thoroughly enjoying thus far.

Windhoek Pairs 2017

The Windhoek International Pairs 2017 tournament was host to 16000 entrants from across the country this year. Four of Stellenbosch GC’s members made it past the regional qualifiers and all the way to the final in Windhoek where the top 24 pairs in South Africa competed for the title. Fred Kieks partnering with Carel Nel managed to finish 22nd, but the team of Stephen Loubser and Hennie Terblanche held the Stellenbosch Golf Club flag the highest by finishing 14th out of the the 24 teams that competed in the final. Congratulations guys and good luck for next year!

Shop talk

Get ready for a shopping extravaganza! The month of July will be like open season for game hunters, just aim and pull the proverbial wallet trigger. Stellenbosch Golf Club's pro shop has not jumped on the retail bandwagon of sale posters everywhere you look around the shop for a couple of simple reasons. For one we don't want it looking like a Christmas tree, because it's not Christmas, and secondly we'd like to keep the bargains and specials under the attention and exclusively for you, our supportive members. The only thing you need to do is come down to the proshop, do not turn straight left, have a browse around the shop, select your desired item, take it to the counter and give us the secret phrase that pays..."QUOTE ME HAPPY!"

Funny for the week

Keep it in the fairway until next week

Kind regards
Team Stellenbosch Golf Club - "We'll make it happen!"
